Despite slowdowns, Hawaii MICE market is bullish on renovations
Reports of slowing meeting and convention activity have not kept long-time popular destination Hawaii from staying ahead of the curve with renovations and enhancements that include the biggest of all on the islands: Waikiki, where a US$5 billion investment has been made.
Among new additions in the past few years: the Waikiki Beach Walk, a pedestrian walkway lined with restaurants and shops, and modern hotels such as the Waikiki EDITION and the Trump International Hotel Waikiki Beach Walk.
Among major renovations: nearly $200 at the Sheraton Waikiki to include a new spa, club lounge and lagoon pool complex.
Other renovations throughout Hawaii include:
- In Kauai, the Sheraton Kauai Resort has expanded an Ocean Pool and adjacent restaurants and bars. “This hotel has always been strong for meetings but the new additions will open up for more corporate and incentive business,” said Angela Vento, regional director of sales and marketing for owners Starwood Hawaii.
- King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel at the Big Island completed a $35 million renovation of its 454 guest rooms and public areas. Improvements include new Hawaiian inspired furniture.
