Walt Disney Co is giving $1 million in aid to help communities battered by Hurricane Michael get back on their feet.

The US Government has declared a major disaster after the Category 4 storm, which struck last week.

The donation will go toward disaster response and recovery via the Florida Disaster Fund, which is overseen by the Volunteer Florida Foundation.

It is the official private state fund which was set up to assist Florida communities during natural disasters.

Disney CEO Bob Iger said: "The families and communities impacted by this devastating hurricane need our help as they begin to rebuild. Through today’s $1 million contribution, and other relief efforts in the weeks and months ahead, we will stand with our Gulf Coast neighbours."

Disney employees are being encouraged to contribute and the company will match funds raised internally dollar for dollar.

Florida Governor Rick Scott said: "We are extremely thankful for Walt Disney Company’s support of the Florida Disaster Fund.  This funding will support disaster response and go directly towards relief efforts in areas impacted by Hurricane Michael."

On Friday, TravelMole reported Scott described how Hurricane Michael left ‘unimaginable destruction’ along Florida’s coastline, leaving many hotels damaged.
