Divers found safe in shark-infested seas
A group of 12 divers have vowed to continue their holiday after spending some 11 hours in shark-infested seas when they were swept away from their charter boat.
The Daily Telegraph reports that the group, made up of five Britons, five Portuguese and two Belgians, were swept away by strong currents on the first day of their holiday.
They were picked up after they formed a human chain in the water to make themselves more visible to passing aircraft; they had already been carried “several miles” from the dive site off Marsa Alam, the newspaper reports.
The boat, named the Oyster, is reportedly used by several British firms, though there has been no suggestion that the vessel was unsafe.
A spokesman for the Egyptian Tourism Ministry is quoted as saying that the incident was caused by a “miscalculation” of the currents.
The area is reportedly so popular because there are several shipwrecks, while whale sharks, hammerheads and thresher sharks are all “common”.
