Dohop welcomes Mexico domestic air shake up
Mexico’s President suggesting that the country could open up domestic air routes to non-Mexican carriers would shake up ‘the monopoly or duopoly on routes,’ says travel tech providerDohop
Sarah Hanan, Commercial Director said : “The last week of September saw 1.4m weekly air seats scheduled in the domestic market and 97% of that was in the hands of three carriers – with Mexico City featuring in 13 of the top 20 routes.”
“So overall we welcome news of opening up to competition as positive for both consumers and the industry. Competition lowers prices.”
“We would expect the likes of Spirit, JetBlue and Southwest to further develop their footprint in Mexico and that this extra capacity would create more connectivity opportunities to/from Mexico by connecting secondary cities in Mexico to the rest of the world.”
“Good news for Mexican travellers, and indeed Mexico’s quite mature tourism economy.”
Last week President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said foreign airlines should be able to operate domestic flights.
“Let’s open it up to competition,” AMLO said. “Let foreign airlines come in, from Europe and the United States, so that they can operate flights inside the country,” the President added.
“At Dohop we have been expanding rapidly our ecosystem of carriers in the North American region and can confirm that already we are looking at this news closely to find new connectivity opportunities for our partners,” Hanan added.
