Dominican Republic set to welcome tourists again in July
The Dominican Republic will officially welcome travelers back to its shores starting July 1.
The minister of economy, planning, and development confirmed the planned reopening date is on schedule which will see international flight operations resume and hotels back in business.
That marks Phase 4 for the post-pandemic recovery.
The Dominican Republic is currently at Phase 2.
"On Phase 4 of the de-escalation process, projected to start on July 1, 2020, tourism will be reactivated, opening hotels, airports, gyms and restaurants," official tourism agency Go Dominican Republic said.
Phase 1 began on May 20 with small businesses of up to 10 employees allowed to open with 50% staffing, which has now been extended to 100% staffing as Phase 2 kicked in on June 3. Private land passenger transport is also now permitted at 60% passenger capacity along with religious services in churches on Sundays only.
Phase 3 is scheduled to begin on June 17 which allows for the opening of larger businesses and more in-person religious services.
Last month Delta Air Lines announced plans to resume scheduled flights to the D.R.
It has been the hardest hit nation in the Caribbean with more than 500 Covid-19 deaths.
