Flying soon from Donald J. Trump International Airport to President Donald J. Trump International Airport?
Many countries around the world traditionally honor their greatest national figures by naming major infrastructure after them — generally once history has had time to render its verdict.
Airports often reflect this custom: Rome Fiumicino bears the name of Leonardo da Vinci, Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport commemorates the French wartime leader and then president, New York’s JFK honors John F. Kennedy, Liverpool Airport celebrates John Lennon, and Sydney Airport is named after Australia’s aviation pioneer Kingsford Smith.
In the United States, the approach appears to be evolving. Under the current U.S. administration, lawmakers have shown unusual enthusiasm for naming monuments and infrastructure under the injunction of a very much present political figure on the public stage : Donald Trump.
As, Donald Trump himself noted, his supporters had told him he was “the greatest president in history” and even “better than both Abraham Lincoln and George Washington.” Then, it sounds just natural that institutions and infrastructures should pay tribute to him, by adding his name.
In the federal capital, plans to modernize Washington’s main international gateway could be the right opportunity. President Donald Trump is soon to meet with US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy to discuss upgrades at Dulles International Airport, according to officials cited by news agency Reuters.
The meeting is to focus on a long-due modernization project and infrastructure improvements designed to enhance passenger experience and capacity at the airport as the latter reached last year 29.01 million passengers, up 6.4%.
Airport authorities already started this modernization by planning to open a new 44,000-m2 concourse later this year. The 14-gate facility will primarily serve operations by United Airlines, one of the airport’s largest carriers.
Officials have also invited proposals for a broader redesign of terminal facilities. The initiative follows criticism about an aging outdated infrastructure. The US Department of Transportation (DoT) previously suggested the airport was “no longer suitable and grand enough” for a capital-city gateway, highlighting the need for modernization. However, some fear that the iconic 1962 Eero Saarinen-designed original terminal might be demolished in this modernization process.
In a statement released by the DoT, the administration left open the possibility of “replacing or building on” Saarinen architectural masterpiece.
Two airports, one same name
In the meantime, a separate political initiative could see the airport renamed. A bill proposed in January to the Congress suggest to change the airport’s name to “Donald J. Trump International Airport.” The legislation has already eight Republican co-sponsors.
This is not the first attempt by Republican lawmakers to name infrastructure after Trump. Earlier proposals in Florida sought to rename West Palm Beach International Airport into “President Donald J Trump International Airport.“
The bill has already been approved and just miss now the signature of Florida’s Republican governor, Ron DeSantis, to become official. The airfield is located less than 10 km from the president’s Mar-a-Lago mansion, which could be reached by driving along the 6 km soon-to-become “President Donald J. Trump Boulevard.”
If all goes according to plan, it will soon be possible to take a flight from Trump International Airport to … Trump International Airport. And it won’t be a joke!
