DOT reviewing airlines’ passenger data handling
The Department of Transportation is undertaking a wide scale review of airlines’ data storing and data privacy practices.
The agency has ordered details of the respective customer data policies from the 10 largest US airlines.
The DOT wants to make sure airlines are taking all reasonable measures to safeguard customer data and are not misusing or secretly selling personal information to third-party businesses.
“Airline passengers should have confidence that their personal information is not being shared improperly with third parties or mishandled by employees,” Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said.
“This review of airline practices is the beginning of a new initiative by DOT to ensure airlines are being good stewards of sensitive passenger data.”
Sen. Ron Wyden (D) said: “Consumers will often never know that their personal data was compromised so regulation cannot depend on consumer complaints to identify corporate abuses.”
“I will continue to work with DOT to ensure that it is holding the airlines responsible for harmful or negligent privacy practices.”
The DOT is seeking specific information from each airline.
It wants to know about their procedures for the collection, handling, and use of personal information.
It seeks details of any passenger data monetization with any outside companies.
It is also asking for their policies to combat data breaches.
Additionally, the DOT is collecting data on customer complaints filed regarding the misuse of their personal data.
The agency says it is a fact-finding exercise to assess how airlines are storing and protecting passenger data.
It says it will use these findings to create consistent best practices guidelines.
