Dozens fall ill during cruise ship norovirus outbreak
More than 70 people have been taken ill during a coast-to-coast Royal Caribbean cruise.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed a norovirus outbreak aboard Royal Caribbean’s Serenade of the Seas.
So far 71 guests and one crew member were reported sick.
The cruise line has implemented enhanced cleaning protocols and isolated ill passengers and crew.
Serenade of the Seas has nearly 1,900 passengers on board.
“The health and safety of our guests is are our top priority. To maintain an environment that supports the highest levels of health and safety onboard our ships, we implement rigorous cleaning procedures, many of which exceed public health guidelines,” Royal Caribbean said.
The CDC is monitoring the outbreak remotely as the cruise nears its end in Florida later this week.
It departed San Diego earlier this month and transited the Panama Canal.
This outbreak is the 19th so far this year, overtaking the total for the whole of 2024.
It is the 14th this year confirmed as norovirus.
