Dozens ill after outbreak on Hong Kong cruise
Dozens of cruisers have fallen ill during a suspected norovirus outbreak aboard a Holand America ship.
Hong Kong’s Centre for Health Protection (CHP) boarded HAL’s Westerdam ship when it docked in the city last week.
There were 65 guests and 11 crew members reported ill with gastroenteritis symptoms.
These include diarrhea and vomiting.
“During the previous voyage to Hong Kong from Japan, a number of guests reported symptoms of gastrointestinal illness,” Holland America said.
“The cases were mostly mild and quickly resolving. As a precaution and consistent with our standard protocols, we implemented enhanced sanitation procedures and conducted additional deep cleaning.”
The ship also made calls at Shanghai and Busan, South Korea.
Initial lab testing onboard found a number of ill people were positive for norovirus.
The ship has departed on its next cruise to the Philippines after getting the all-clear from Hong Kong health officials.
