Orange mousse thought to be responsible for Maldives outbreak

More than a hundred tourists – including several dozen British holidaymakers – have been hit by severe food poisoning while in the Indian Ocean resort of Meeru.

A story in today’s Daily Mail says 125 people fell ill on the resort in the Maldives, with 15 people ending up in hospital. Two couples, the newspaper reports, are still not better several weeks after returning home. Several of the tourists are now planning legal action and are seeking compensation.

Brenda Wall, of the watchdog organisation Holiday Travel Watch predicted that some of the travellers could be compensated up to 10 or 20 times the cost of their trips. She added: “The food poisoning was salmonella and one source – which had been mentioned by more than one holidaymaker – was an orange mousse. Under the Package Travel Regulations 1992, tour operators are responsible for the failure of a hotel or food supplier.”

A spokesman for Hayes and Jarvis, which sent some of the travellers to Neeru, told the Daily Mail: “We are very sorry to hear that anyone has fallen ill on holiday and will fully investigate this particular complaint and respond directly to the customer.”
