East London MPs urge Cameron to hurry up with Heathrow decision
A group of east London MPs have written to Prime Minister David Cameron urging him to press ahead with a decision on Heathrow expansion.
The letter has been signed by MPs including Labour’s Wes Streeting, Ilford North, Mike Gapes, Ilford South, and Jim Fitzpatrick, Poplar and Limehouse.
It said the Airports Commission has produced the ‘most rigorous assessment of London’s aviation needs for a generation’.
“The process has led to a new and better plan from Heathrow," said the letter.
"It is a plan that supports the opportunity of East London and the aspirations of East Londoners. It now falls to the Government to get on with it – or see our great city fall behind."
But meanwhile, Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell, who is opposed to the expansion, said he would remain an opponent even if the Labour Party supported it.
He is MP for Hayes and Harlington, where homes could be demolished if Heathrow expands.
McDonnell said he could remain shadow chancellor because his party would accept dissent on the issue.
