Easygroup launches the £5 hotel room

Thursday, 14 May, 2004 0

The EasyGroup is reportedly ready to start work on a new no-frills London hotel that will offer rooms for as little as £5 per night.

According to a report in The Independent newspaper, the company is about to refurbish a four-storey Georgian terrace in west London, with plans for more hotels in city centres across Britain as well as in foreign destinations such as New York, Paris and Barcelona.

Rooms will reportedly be built of moulded plastic, measuring just 10 feet by nine feet, with no carpet, pictures, telephones or televisions; guests will have to take their own towels and toiletries.

The best prices – reportedly as low as £5 per night – will be made available to those who book well in advance. The average price for a room is planned to be £30, with the last rooms to be booked costing £50 or £60 per night.

James Rothnie, of EasyGroup, is quoted as saying: “This is a challenge to the B&Bs. It is for anyone who does not travel on a corporate credit card. We are convinced there is a gap in the market for branded budget hotels where the consumer can be guaranteed safety and a clean bed, though not much more.”
