easyJet founder plans ‘The Car Club’

easyJet founder Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou has announced plans for ‘The Car Club’ – a car rental scheme where customers can ‘share’.

He has already joined the car hire business with easyCar rental company and the new scheme would run through its website, reports the Daily Mail.

A joint launch-project with Brent Hoberman, the co-founder of late bookings website LastMinute.com, The Car Club, due to launch in the New Year, will see registered owners pool their vehicles and allow them to be rented out for an hourly fee.

Car owners can decide the cost of hiring their vehicle, and its availability.

Haji-Ioannou sees the scheme as a way of tapping into the thousands of cars that sit idle on UK driveways every day.

‘Rather than having to buy the cars to be rented and pay the ownership costs, this business model relies on the fact that there are plenty of under-used cars on the road already,’ the entrepreneur comments.

Cars will be fitted with tracker systems, in case of theft.
