Easyjet gets greener

Thursday, 12 Jun, 2008 0

Easyjet is to improve its environmental image by introducing new engines to its fleet of Airbus A319s.

The budget carrier’s new engines will reduce mono-nitrogen oxides (NOx) by 25% which will in turn help with C02 emissions, fuel consumption and maintenance costs.

The CFM56-5B Tech Insertion engines’ 1% improvement in fuel consumption will reduce CO2 emissions by 200 tons per aircraft per year.

The airline says that while focus in the aviation world is currently on lowering CO2 emissions, the European Commission is currently developing a NOx emission legislation proposal that will help operators lower their environmental impact whilst lowering costs too.

Easyjet CEO Andy Harrison said: “There is no doubt that climate change is a real and pressing danger which should be a concern for us all and that the biggest benefits are to be gained from environmentally-sensitive companies developing and operating the big leaps forward in technology that will enable our industry to achieve the green growth that is expected of us.”
