Economic turmoil and widespread strikes? Sounds like the ideal place for a holiday
It’s going through a major financial crisis and has been hit by strike after strike, but according to Skyscanner that’s just not enough to deter the British holidaymaker.
In fact, according to the flight comparison site, Greece’s current economic turmoil is having the opposite effect.
While searches for flights in other Eurozone destinations have dropped year on year, Greece and Estonia have experienced a rise in interest.
“British travellers expect to find great value holidays in areas under acute financial strain,†said Gareth Williams, Skyscanner CEO.
“Hotels, restaurants and tourist businesses are under pressure to compete closely on price which means that destinations like Greece must offer great value in resort, compensating for the relatively poor value of the Euro for British travellers.â€
While Greece is riding the wave, other favourite sunspots in the Eurozone have seen a dip in flight searches.
But while Portugal is down 23% and Spain has dropped by 27%, overall they remain among the destinations attracting the highest volume of visitors.
