Elderly British couple arrested after cruise ship drugs bust
An elderly British couple has been arrested on suspicion of drug smuggling during a Caribbean cruise.
The pair, aged 70 and 72, were taken into custody in Portugal moments after their ship docked in Lisbon.
Officers boarded the unnamed ship and found large quantities of cocaine concealed in four suitcases in a cabin occupied by the pair.
Police have not revealed their names, but they indicated that the couple has already appeared in court in Portugal.
Their arrests came following a tip off from the UK’s National Crime Agency, said police.
In statement, Policia Judiciaria said: "This action, which was supported by the Maritime Police, is a result of the permanent exchange of information and cooperation between the Judicial Police and the competent authorities of the United Kingdom, in particular with the National Crime Agency."
