Emirates opens up Japan connection

Emirates launched flights last week from Dubai to Osaka.

The airline has also set up a code-share with Japan Airlines (JAL) to offer connections on to Tokyo, Fukouka and Sapporo.

The direct flight takes eight hours and 40 minutes, cutting hours off the journey. Previously it would have taken a minimum of 13 hours, flying with Emirates to Hong Kong or Bangkok and connecting with Cathay Pacific or Thai Airways, to Osaka.

The down-side of the flight is that it leaves Dubai at 0300, arriving in Osaka late in the afternoon the following day, so businessperson from Dubai would have to set off for a daytime meeting two days in advance. The return flight leaves Osaka at 2320 and arrives in Dubai at 0545 the following day.

The flight is code-shared with JAL, and is operated by an Emirates Boeing 777. There are four return flights a week, departing Dubai on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Return fares start at about Dhs 3,480 (£605).

Flying with Emirates from London to Osaka would take 18 hours, with a connection time of one and a half hours in Dubai. The fare would be about £820.
