Emirates is to cut up to 9,000 jobs, which is around 15% of its pre-pandemic workforce.

President Sir Tim Clark said the Dubai-based airline has already cut a tenth of its staff, but added more jobs were likely to go.

In an interview with the BBC, Sir Tim said the airline had been on course for one of its best ever years, but the pandemic has marked a steep downturn in its fortunes.

At least 700 of the airline’s 4,500 pilots were given redundancy notices this week, which means at least 1,200 have lost their jobs since the start of the pandemic.

The majority of the cuts were made to Airbus crew as the airline currently has little need for its A380 double-deckers.

Thousands of cabin crew have also been made redundant, according to the BBC.
