Emirates to fly daily from Glasgow
Scottish agents have responded with delight to the news that Emirates is set to launch a daily service to Dubai from Glasgow next year. The airline will begin daily non stop flights to Dubai on April 10, in the process opening up access to India, the Far East and Australia. It is hoped that the route could attract around 150,000 passengers a year. Gillian Crossley, director of Beaches Travel in Glasgow told TravelMole: “That is fabulous news. Dubai is becoming more and more popular north of the border. Currently we have to send our customers via London or Amsterdam so that is great.” The route will be the first long haul service to operate east of Scotland. And it has been secured partly due to a hefty subsidy from the Scottish Executive’s Route Development Fund – the first time it has supported a Middle Eastern route. A spokeswoman declined to reveal how much the subsidy was worth, but confirmed it is the largest-ever investment made so far from the £6.8million fund. She told TravelMole that the Executive believed it was money well spent: “It will be a huge boost to tourism and will bring new business opportunities.” The Airbus A330-200 aircraft will be configured in two classes with 34 Business and 251 Economy Class seats. Asked who the carrier was aiming at with the new launch, a spokeswoman said: “They think it will get a mix of business and leisure travellers, they are really aiming at both markets.” The flight will depart Glasgow at 2pm, arriving in Dubai at 0.30am the following day. The return flight, will depart Dubai at 7.30am and arrive in Glasgow at 12.25pm the same day. All times are local. The new route will take the total number of Emirates’ services between the UK and Dubai to 11 each day. The carrier also operates three times daily from both Heathrow and Gatwick, twice daily from Manchester and operates a daily service from Birmingham, with a second daily Birmingham service due to be added in March.
