Entertainment powers Kansas City meeting market
The continued expansion of the $850 million, eight-block Kansas City Power & Light District is helping to power the meeting market in Kansas City.
CVB officials call the district the “largest new development project in the Midwest.”
It has 50 bars, restaurants and entertainment venues. “Everything from fine dining to line dancing,” says the website.
Sprint Center is an 18,500-seat, all-glass arena that regularly hosts major concerts and sporting events. The huge entertainment center is only two blocks from the convention center itself.
A $5 billion downtown renaissance has further spurred interest in the area as a convention Mecca.
The Kansas City Convention Center offers more than 800,000 square feet of space and is one of the few venues of its size to have an open catering policy. The center recently completed a $150 million renovation featuring new projection screens and data-powered AV equipment in meeting rooms, high-speed wireless Internet access and some state-of-the-art sound systems.
The metro area here has 26,000 guest rooms with nearly 3,500 in the downtown area.
