Ex-Thomson Airways MD tipped for top job at easyJet
Former Thomson Airways managing director Chris Browne has emerged as one of the frontrunners to take over from Carolyn McCall as easyJet boss.
Browne, who became the low-cost carrier’s chief operating officer last October, is reported to be vying for the top job with easyJet’s chief commercial officer Peter Duffy.
McCall will leave the airline at the end of the year to take over as ITV chief executive in 2018.
The Times reported that City sources have also mooted easyJet non-executive director Andy Martin, a former chief operating officer of Compass, as a possible replacement for McCall.
Other possible internal candidates include Moya Greene, who joined the board last month, according to the Time. The 63-year-old is chief executive of Royal Mail.
EasyJet lost £212 million in the first half of the year, £82 million of which was blamed on the weaker pound.
The airline has recently announced that it will set up new Austrian headquarters and a separate, Vienna-based airline, easyJet Europe, to enable it to continue to operate flights within the EU following Brexit.
