Expansion plans for Gold Cost Centre
The planned extension of the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre has been tipped to provide a huge lift to local tourism.
Queensland Tourism Minister Margaret Keech said the expansion plans would allow the centre to cater for larger conventions that had been bypassing the Gold Coast and pump tens of millions more dollars into the local economy.
Mrs Keech said the $128 million invested in stage one of the convention centre had brought huge dividends and stage two would do the same.
“The region is already forging a reputation as a great place to work and play, and the centre’s expansion will allow us to pitch our product to a wider audience,” she said.
“Conventions and exhibitions are a high-yielding tourism industry segment, with delegates spending far more than most tourists.”
Mrs Keech said the Gold Coast was a strong convention destination because it had the advantage of offering so much for delegates to enjoy either before or after their business was done.
