Expedition line Exploris under bankruptcy protection
Expedition cruise line Exploris has reportedly been placed in receivership by a French court.
The Nantes Commercial Court made the ruling in late September.
Exploris Expeditions & Voyages President Philippe Videau said the line was averaging just 50% occupancy levels earlier this year.
Under French law, the receivership process kicks in when companies are unable to service existing debts, but enables the company to continue operating and secures current jobs.
It will operate under tight receivership supervision as it works out a reorganization plan.
It is expected that its Antarctica season will operate as planned.
The line offers polar region cruises marketed to the French market aboard the 132-guest Exploris One, which it acquired from Silversea.
Earlier this year, Adventure Canada announced plans to charter the Exploris One from the company for summer cruises in the Arctic.
“Unfortunately, we have a small cash flow problem that has been exacerbated by this last-minute cancellation by a major charterer, which has made things extremely difficult for us,” said cruise line VP Éric Lustman.
“We have made the decision, and this is not something to be taken lightly, to file for bankruptcy protection. It is a management decision,” Lustman added.
Exploris is reportedly in talks with investors to secure a cash injection.
