Facial hair, Facebook unhappiness and booze
Newsnight presenter Jeremy Paxman caused a storm on twitter this week with the debut of his new facial hair. Following the airing of Monday night’s programme, the phrase ‘Paxmansbeard’ was trending and a spoof twitter account dedicated to the famous fuzz was launched. It remains to be seen whether Mr Paxman’s whiskers will be a regular addition to the show but things are looking positive according to the latest update from the BBC.
It may be the best way to stay connected, but this week, psychologists have claimed that Facebook is spreading ‘unhappiness’. As well as staying in touch with friends, family and sometimes colleagues, the world’s biggest social network may in fact be linked to a decline in well-being. It turns out that meeting up with friends in person or talking on the phone will lead to greater levels of happiness. The benefits of Facebook are obvious, the ability to stay in touch with many people, across the world – but it’s worth remembering that a quick phone call or a catch up coffee are equally as important when it comes to you overall feeling of contentment…
When a news website like ‘The New York Times’ crashes for more than two hours, the masses take to Twitter in outrage. This then attracts a storm of one liners including finger pointing at the new owner of The Washington post "What, you thought Jeff Bezos was going to buy the post and play defence?" Even The Times themselves got involved tweeting "Readers, don’t fret. If http://nytimes.com remains down, we are ready to tweet op-eds and editorials in 140-character increments." Twitter once again providing a platform for all the budding comedians out there!
