Family friendly Sacramento
California’s state capital is a celebrated foodie destination.
Still, Sacramento offers so much more. It’s the perfect city escape for the whole family.
Surrounded by rolling farmland that supplies its vibrant culinary scene, Sacramento unlocks exciting pro sports, music and fun kid-pleasing activities as well as scenic nature on the doorstep:
Catch a game
Sacramento is home to two major league teams, The Sacramento Kings of the NBA and the Oakland Athletics of the MLB. The Kings play at the Golden 1 Centre and the A’s will play at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento for the next three years. Both offer an electric atmosphere and make for a great day out to mingle with local Sacramentans.
Explore the city on two wheels
Cycling is one of the best ways to explore Sacramento with more than 32 miles of paved bike trail along the scenic American River Parkway. Cyclists can hop on the trail at many different points and ride along the river, or they can take a spin around the city and rent a bike in Old Sacramento – the city has added multiple bike lanes in the past few years. Many hotels offer bike rental services as well as plenty of bike rental shops in the city.
Stop for a refuel
There are plenty of kid-friendly places to stop and refuel. Leatherby’s Family Creamery is a local favorite serving huge ice cream sundaes. For classic diner vibes, Rick’s Dessert Diner is a must-visit, featuring cakes, pies, pastries, and more served in a fun, retro atmosphere. For those with dietary needs, check out Babes Ice Cream and Donuts, featuring gluten-free, vegan desserts.
For younger kids
The perfect day out for young children, at Fairytale Town kids can climb a treehouse, capture a castle, sail the seven seas on a pirate ship, and slide down a shoe in Storybook Park. Young ones can interact with Mary’s little lambs, Peter rabbit, the three little pigs plus many more animals in the park’s farmyard. The Sacramento Zoo is also a great day out for families with younger children, located in picturesque Land Park just south of the city center. Highlights at the zoo include feeding the giraffes, watching the primates and hearing the roar of a lion.
