Family resort with a business-conference twist
The 650-room Nickelodeon Resort by Marriott International in San Diego and the Nickelodeon kids entertainment company are teaming up for an unusual project that may be a model for other parts of the tourism industry.
The new concept is designed to provide a rash of family entertainment so that guests do not need to go off-site to theme parks. Themed pools and a large water park are among the attractions that also include Nickelodeon-themed characters.
Perhaps the most unusual aspect of this family atmosphere, however, is the sizeable amount of meeting space. The San Diego property will have 35,000 square feet of meeting space. It will be separated from the entertainment areas so each group has privacy.
“A cruise line on land,†was a description by one Marriott executive.
The new concept will open next fall. By 2013, Marriott says it expects to have nearly 40 Nickelodeon Resorts open throughout the US. Report by David Wilkening
