Fires and soaring temperatures cause havoc
At least 14 killed in Spain and Portugal as heatwave gathers strength
Searing, soaring temperatures across much of Europe have led at least 14 deaths due to fires and heat stroke. In Portugal the worst forest fires in living memory have claimed at last eight lives, with hundreds of people being made homeless and thousands of acres of forest being destroyed.
Some 13 out of 18 districts around the country, particularly those in the interior, have been affected by the blazes. Some 2,000 firefighters including reserves from the army have been drafted in but reports suggest the hot, dry conditions are making things extremely difficult.
Meanwhile, at least seven people have died in southern Spain, in temperatures that reached the mid-forties Centigrade over the weekend. The provinces of Andalucia and Extremadura were worst affected; both provinces have also seen forest fires breaking out. Recent reports suggest that Extremadura could soon be affected by the fires that are raging just over the border in Portugal.
Huge fires that have been affecting large parts of the French Riviera appear to be on the wane; however, estimates suggest that some 30,000 hectares of woodland have been destroyed; the worst environmental damage in the region for more than 25 years.
