First UK charter flight from Jamaica
The first chartered repatriation flight organised by the UK government from Jamaica recently landed at Gatwick Airport.
The flight left Kingston’s Norman Manley International Airport at the weekend.
Up to 8,000 British nationals were thought to be in Jamaica when the category 5 hurricane hit.
The UK Foreign Office urged Brits to register their presence to enable updates and priority booking for a flight home.
The chartered flight brought in a first delivery of aid supplies.
The UK has pledged a £7.5m financial support package for the country.
Distribution of the aid is being held up due to damaged roads near the hardest hit areas.
“There are entire communities that seem to be marooned and areas that seem to be flattened” said Jamaica’s Information Minister Dana Morris Dixon.
The tourism ministry has set a December 15 date to fully reopen all tourism facilities and infrastructure, including resorts, attractions and cruise ports.
