First wheelchair accessible hot air ballooning
Up & Away Ballooning says it is becoming the first operator in the US to offer wheelchair-confined travelers the chance to participate in that activity.
The company offers tours of Northern California’s wine-famous Sonoma County. The company is utilizing a specially-designed basket that can carry wheelchair riders and up to three other people, according to “Travel Writer News.”
The inaugural flight is scheduled for early April (weather permitting) and a percentage of proceeds from each flight will benefit the International Wheelchair Foundation.
Established in 1993, Up & Away Ballooning flies the newest Federal Aviation Administration (F.A.A.) certified balloon equipment, and its pilots are FAA certified, according to the company.
“By choice they carry fewer passengers per balloon and flights follow a scenic route that takes longer than other flights in the area,” the company says.
