Flight cancellations pile up ahead of holiday weekend
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg warned airline to manage expectations and avoid wide-scale summer disruption for travelers.
It comes as 1,000 flights were axed Friday overs bad weather.
It followed more than 1,700 cancelled on Thursday, according to FlightAware.
Buttigieg held a meeting with airline CEOs to seek assurances over steps airlines are taking to minimize disruption to summer schedules.
Airlines including JetBlue, Southwest Airlines and Alaska Airlines have trimmed their schedules to cope with acute staffing shortfalls.
Buttigieg also pressed airlines for improvements in customer service practices, allowing passengers to rebook easily, and claim refunds without hassle.
The meeting was ‘productive and collaborative’ trade group Airlines for Americas said.
Airports hit with the most cancellations include Charlotte, New York City area airports, and Reagan Washington National.
Currently about 2.2 million travelers are flying on average each day which is close to pre-pandemic levels.
