Flights to Tunisia cancelled due to strike over politician’s death
Airlines have been forced to cancel flights to and from Tunisia today after a strike was announced in protest of the assassination of opposition figure Mohamed Brahmi.
British Airways confirmed it has had to cancel its service to Tunis today due to the strike action and said it has tried to re-book affected customers on to a later service.
State-owned Tunisair announced yesterday that all flights to and from Tunisia would not be operating today.
The Foreign Office has advised holidaymakers to keep up to date with developments, avoid all protests and follow instructions given by the security authorities, their tour operator or hotel.
Thomas Cook said there was no change to its flight programme and that the tour operator had no excursions to Tunis taking place today.
A spokesman said: "We are closely monitoring the situation in Tunisia, working with our team in resorts and following FCO advice."
The politician was assassinated in Ariana, a suburb of Tunis yesterday which led to protests outside the Ministry of Interior in Tunis and in downtown Sidi Bouzid in Central Tunisia, with many calling for the resignation of the Government.
The 58-year-old was described as a strong critic of the government, having founded the Movement of the People Party after the Arab Spring in 2011 and holding a key position in the National Constituent Assembly charged with drawing up a new constitution for Tunisia.
