French airport renamed after Queen Elizabeth II

An airport is being renamed to honour Queen Elizabeth II – in France.

French airport Le Touquet-Paris-Plage International Airport will soon be known as Elizabeth II Le Touquet-Paris-Plage International Airport.

Le Touquet officials proposed the name change to Buckingham Palace shortly after the Queen’s death.

It has now been approved by King Charles.

The town says it is a recognition of Le Touquet as ‘the most British of French resorts.’

The French seaside resort has strong links with the Royal Family.

The Queen’s uncle Edward VIII often holidayed there, sometimes with a young Elizabeth.

“This is a tribute to a great Queen and her uncle who had a fondness for France,” Le Touquet officials said in a statement.

Le Touquet is about one hour’s drive south of Calais.

It became a favourite pre-war holiday spot for upper class Brits and by the 1950s the airport was the third busiest in France.

The England rugby team’s training camp is in Le Touquet ahead of the Rugby World Cup, which begins next month.
