French strikes threaten flight cancellations and delays
French air traffic controllers are threatening two days of strike action starting tomorrow (Wednesday).
Talks are continuing and airlines will be informed of the outcome this afternoon.
The French Civil Aviation Authority will calculate how much capacity can be handled by those controllers who don’t strike and will let airlines know later today how many flights they need to cancel.
French airspace is the busiest in Europe, with an average of 8,000 flights each day.
The strikes would cause disruption for thousands of British holidaymakers returning from their Easter breaks.
The SNCTA union is calling for nine days of industrial action between April 8 and May 2, starting with a 48-hour walk-out.
EasyJet said the strike would have ‘significant impact’ on its flights, including cancellations.
"We are doing everything possible to minimise the impact to our customers and are working through our plans which we will communicate as soon as we can," it said.
"If we are forced to cancel any flights, our customers will be informed by SMS and email, with up to date information on the situation available on easyJet.com."
It strongly advised passengers due to travel on April 8 and 9 to check the status of their flight before going to the airport.
Air France also warned of cancellations should the strike go ahead.
"We will inform you soon and make our utmost to assist you to minimise the impact of this industrial action on your travel plans," it said on its website.
