Fresh terror attacks in Egypt lead to State of Emergency
Egypt has announced a three-month state of emergency following IS-led terror attacks on two churches that killed at least 44 worshipers.
Suicide bombers caused explosions at St Mark’s Cathedral in Alexandria and Mar Girgis Church in the northern city of Tanta on April 9.
The State of Emergency allows authorities to make arrests without warrants, place restrictions on the free movement of people and public gatherings, monitor all forms of communication and to arrest anyone suspected of violating the State of Emergency.
Announced by President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi, it must be approved by parliament before it is implemented, but the president has the support of the majority of members.
He has already deployed troops across the country to protect ‘vital and important infrastructure".
