Gastro bug sickens 167 on Royal Caribbean ship
Scores of passengers have fallen ill on Royal Caribbean Cruises’ Oasis of the Seas with gastrointestinal symptoms.
The cruise line says the number sickened stands at 167, with cases reported since Sunday.
Royal Caribbean is bringing additional medical staff on board and ‘engaging in intensive sanitary procedures to minimize the risk of any further issues,’ according to cruise line spokesman Owen Torres.
Passenger said they were kept inside their cabins as the ship docked in Falmouth, Jamaica on Wednesday.
The ship is on a week-long Caribbean cruise.
Although no consolation to those currently suffering, the number of cases of shipboard gastrointestinal outbreaks is on the decline, and was significantly down in 2018 compared to the previous year.
Last year just 547 cases were recorded on 10 cruises by the CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program.
An outbreak is classified when at least 3% of passengers and crew fall ill.
