Gay tourist jailed for two years in Fiji
An Australian man has reportedly been jailed for two years after admitting to homosexual activities on the island of Fiji.
According to the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper, quoting the Fiji Times, retired university lecturer Thomas McCoskar and a Fijian man admitted to the having sex in the capital, Nadi, over Easter.
Gay sex is illegal in the Pacific archipelago, with anyone found guilty subject to jail terms of up to 14 years.
The sentencing judge is quoted as saying that the crime was “so disgusting that it would make any person vomit”.
Suggesting that the “crime bordered on paedophilia” (the Fijian man was actually 23 years old), the judge is quoted as adding: “If you wanted to have fun you should have stayed in Australia instead of trying to come to Fiji and exploit our young boys. With you being a former lecturer, you should have known that such indecent acts are illegal.”
