Government spending on hotels down in 2012

Recent figures released from the Federal Procurement Data System say that federal agencies spent less on hotels in 2011 than in 2010.  Spending is most likely going be even less in 2012.

Agencies’ spending on hotels dropped more than 7 percent last year, from $308 million in 2010 to $285 million in 2011.

The FPDS figures reflect contracts that agencies award to hotels for lodging and do not include spending through the General Services Administration’s Smart Pay charge card program, which has about 2.5 million cardholders across the government.

The drop in spending is due to budget cuts and Obama administration directives to cut travel spending across the board.

.Recently, TravelMole reported that federal government per diem rates would be frozen at the FY2012 level, a move the American Lodging and Hospitality Association says was not "ideal" but ""far less radical approach than the crippling move that General Services Administration had contemplated."
