Green victory as island is saved from development
Mexico: Environmentalists celebrate as hotel builders are scuppered
Mexican environmentalists are celebrating after a “paradise island” was saved from massive development when its owners decided not to sell it to the highest bidder.
Isla Espiritu Santo, or the Island of the Holy Spirit, is a 23,000-acre refuge off the coast of the famous Baja California, in the extreme north-west of the country. According to The Times, it is home to various rare species of wildlife, boasts clear blue waters and white sandy beaches, and very few inhabitants.
While developers were more-or-less queuing up to buy the land and build hotels and resorts, the community group that previously owned the island decided to sell it to the Mexican government for some £2 million less than was being offered elsewhere.
A spokesman for the group told The Times: “The price that was offered to us was a lot lower than what we were quoted by Mexican and foreign companies. But considering its natural beauty, we agreed to the sale so these lands could be passed on to all Mexicans.”
