Ground breaking begins for development housing Shangri-La’s first Melbourne hotel
Executives from Shangri-La and developer S P Setia conducted a ground breaking ceremony in Melbourne for the city’s $565 million Sapphire By The Gardens mixed-use development.
The landmark development will be home to Shangri-La’s first property in Victoria, featuring 500 guestrooms.
The development will also house 300 luxury residential apartments spanning two towers measuring more than 60 storeys.
The two towers will be linked by a Sky Lounge on level 46 which overlooks the UNESCO world heritage listed Royal Exhibition Building.
Work will last about three years, providing over 1,000 jobs during the construction phase and initial hotel operational period.
"Melbourne is one of Australia’s top business and tourism cities and we are pleased to partner SP Setia for our expansion in the city. Shangri-La Hotel, Melbourne will be part of an iconic building complex," said Shangri-La Asia Limited CEO, Mr Lim Beng Chee.
"We couldn’t have chosen a more strategic and spectacular location to site our hotel and to introduce our Asian-inspired hospitality to all visitors once the complex is completed." he said.
Hong Kong-based Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts now manages more than 100 hotels in 76 destinations globally under the Shangri-La, Kerry, Hotel Jen and Traders brands.
