Guam a surprise to be among US’s most visited
Florida and California are expected to be huge US destinations for overseas travelers, but Guam unexpectedly turned up as no. 7 on the most-visited list.
Overseas travelers made New York their most visited, followed by California, Florida, Hawaii, Nevada, Illinois and Guam.
Guam receives up to 2,700 visitors a day or about 480,000 in the past year, according to Guam’s office of Travel & Tourism.
Guam is located in the Western Pacific, about 1,500 miles south of Japan and 3,800 miles west of Hawaii.
Tourism officials say its attraction includes pristine beaches, championship golf courses, world-class diving and snorkeling. There are also attractive cultural and historical sites.
“It’s geographic location makes Guam the gateway to Micronesia and, with excellent air service to cities throughout Asia, a convenient stop-over point for trans-Pacific travelers,” according to a news release.
Guam has more than a dozen luxury resorts as well as moderately priced hotels.
