HAL starts renewable fuel testing
Holland America Line has begun long-term biofuel testing on flagship, Rotterdam.
It is testing 100% low carbon intensity sustainable marine fuel while sailing within the Norwegian World Heritage Fjords.
The ship bunkered the biofuel before leaving Rotterdam last week and will operate one of its four engines using the low carbon intensity oil.
This sustainable marine fuel is derived from organic waste or residues and certified according to the EU Renewable Energy Directive while in the Fjords.
The GoodFuels MR1-100 sustainable biofuel is supplied by FincoEnergies.
It says it will yield an estimated 86% reduction in life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions.
“We are excited to demonstrate a next-generation fuel source that can help us toward our pursuit of net zero emissions,” said Gus Antorcha, HAL president.
The initial tests will occur on one engine during cruises this month, with the potential to expand to multiple engines during the summer while sailing in the Norwegian World Heritage Fjords.
HAL is one of the first Carnival Corp brands to run a long-term 100% biofuel shipboard operation, having completed a successful first test in August 2022.
Carnival Corporation’s 2023 Sustainability Report released in April 2024 notes significant achievements toward its 2030 goals.
