Holywood star Halle Berry and tennis legend Roger Federer shine a spotlight on autumn in Switzerland
Switzerland Tourism (ST) released a witty and uplifting new video shot against the breathtaking backdrop of Lake Lucerne. In the video, tennis legend Roger Federer teams up with Hollywood star Halle Berry aboard Switzerland’s most iconic public transport. The playful short film highlights not only the country’s dazzling fall scenery. It also reflects the growing importance taken by the autumn for the tourism industry.
Hollywood glamour
For the second year, Federer has joined forces with Switzerland Tourism (ST) to shine a spotlight on the beauty of the Swiss autumn. This time, he has invited an internationally renowned guest: Halle Berry. The Oscar-winning actress, known for roles in Monster’s Ball, Die Another Day, the X-Men franchise and Catwoman, brings both glamour and humor to the campaign.
The new film, Beautiful Autumn, targets priority markets including the US, UK, Germany, India, Southeast Asia, Japan and Brazil. In the video, Berry playfully sabotages the shoot. She secretly delays production because she’s fallen so much in love with Switzerland that she doesn’t want to leave.
Directed by German-Swiss filmmaker Marc Forster, an Oscar nominee, the spot is styled as a behind-the-scenes mockumentary. It cuts between Federer and Berry’s interviews and sweeping shots from a panoramic gondola, a vintage postal bus, and a lake steamer.
“The film celebrates the highlights of a Swiss autumn: longer, higher-quality stays and more mindful travel—the essence of Travel Better,” said André Hefti, Chief Marketing Officer of Switzerland Tourism.
To boost appeal, ST is also rolling out special Swiss Travel Pass promotions, giving international visitors unlimited first-class access to the country’s public transport network throughout the campaign.
All regions experience overnights’ growth in autumn
The timing couldn’t be better. Hotel data show that fall has become one of Switzerland’s fastest-growing tourism seasons, thanks to its mild climate and spectacular colors.
Between September and November, hotel overnights have climbed 10.3% over the past five years (2019–2024), outpacing the overall yearly growth of 7.1%. During the 2024 fall season (September–November), guests generated nearly 3.3 million overnight stays in Switzerland’s mountain hotels.
The strongest growth in overnight stays compared to fall 2019 came from Fribourg (+33.3%), Eastern Switzerland (+16.3%), and the Bern Region (+12%). In mountain cantons, overnight stays rose 8.2% in Graubünden (+66,729) and 8.5% in Valais (+60,762).
Swiss residents remain the main driver (+17% over five years, or +707,970 nights), but international travelers are increasingly contributing too. Overnight stays from abroad since 2017 (the last year without a specific autumn campaign) rose 8.2%, with euro-zone visitors up 5.5%. Domestic overnights in hotels rose even stronger, at 21.7%.
In fall 2024, Swiss residents accounted for 59% of all overnight stays in the mountains, while European guests contributed 19% and long-haul visitors 22%. The most dramatic surge came indeed from US tourists. their stays skyrocketed by nearly 35% (+213,005 nights).
