Harvard students protest at LeMeridien Cambridge
A year-long protest against Le Meridien Hotel in Cambridge hasn’t yet accomplished much, but it is gaining support from activists and Harvard students. About 400 protestors turned out for a rally in support this week, the Harvard student press reports.
The Cambridge City Council also backs the protestors, having voted in October 2012 to boycott the property.
The protestors say that the hotel’s owner, HEI Hotels & Resorts, has prevented employees from unionizing.
The protest was organized by UNITE HERE! Local 26, a labor union that represents workers across Massachusetts, including at Harvard’s dining hall.
Protesting students said they saw the rally as part of a greater struggle for hospitality workers’ rights throughout Boston and Cambridge, and called on Harvard to support the Le Méridien workers.
Harvard students also are keeping an eye on the DoubleTree Suites by Hilton Hotel Boston, which Harvard owns, and which also is considering unionizing.
