Heathrow weekend strike threat
Travellers using London’s Heathrow airport this weekend could face delays and disruption following a decision by baggage handlers to strike.
Members of the Transport and General Workers Union (TGWU) who work for the baggage and check-in company Swissport are reportedly ready to walk out for 48 hours, starting on Sunday morning. Swissport staff work as baggage handlers and check-in staff for some 21 carriers including Singapore Airlines, Malaysian and Aer Lingus.
The union is claiming that its members have had no pay rise in the last 18 months, and that Swissport representatives walked out on talks aimed at avoiding the stoppage.
A spokesman for Heathrow reportedly told the BBC that the airport would be ensuring contingency plans are in place for the weekend.
