Hertz makes huge order for Tesla EVs
Just out of bankruptcy, Hertz Global Holdings is pinning its future on a green mobility revolution.
It just made a huge order for 100,000 Teslas.
That gave Tesla Inc.’s shares a big boost, pushing the carmaker’s value past $1 trillion for the first time.
The cars will be delivered by the end of next year.
It’s the single-largest purchase ever for electric vehicles, worth a possible $4.2 billion.
Tesla’s Model 3 sedans will be available at Hertz locations in major US markets and then in parts of Europe beginning in early November, Hertz said.
Hertz also plans to build its own charging stations.
“How do we democratize access to electric vehicles? That’s a very important part of our strategy,” Mark Fields, interim CEO said.
“Tesla is the only manufacturer that can produce EVs at scale.”
Hertz hopes to electrify most of its fleet of cars and trucks over time.
“We want to work with every manufacturer to help them launch EVs and drive this secular shift to electrification,” Fields added.
Hertz has tapped American football star Tom Brady to promote the Tesla order and showcase electric vehicle rentals.
When it receives the entire order, about 20% of Hertz’ entire global fleet will be EVs.
