Holiday jet diverted after lightning strike
A Ryanair flight was forced to divert to Glasgow after being struck by lightning en route to Alicante.
The aircraft was hit shortly after taking off from Edinburgh airport just after 18:00 hours yesterday evening.
It was forced to land at Glasgow Prestwick, the nearest available airport.
Following an inspection by engineers, the aircraft was cleared for take off for Alicante a short while later.
Apologising to passengers for the short delay, a Ryanair spokesman said: "The pilot decided to divert as a precaution, in line with Ryanair procedure, to assess if there was any damage, as safety is our number one priority. There was no damage and once inspected by Ryanair engineers, the aircraft was cleared to fly to Alicante."
