Hong Kong Airlines power struggle continues as directors hit with injunction
A boardroom war between two rival factions at Hong Kong Airlines has taken another strange turn.
Former director Zhong Guosong, who claims control of the airline, served an injunction on rival executives with ties to backer HNA Group.
The injunction seeks to stop four board members from interfering, sabotaging, or making any decisions beyond normal operations.
Zhong targeted airline chairman Hou Wei, Wang Liya, Sun Jianfeng and Tang Kit in the injunction, all of whom have affiliations with HNA Group.
It increases uncertainty over who is really in charge of the airline.
This latest development comes as the Hong Kong government’s deadline looms this week seeking answers to exactly who is running the airline.
"Hong Kong Airlines’ majority shareholders wish to reiterate that the reason for taking this action is to secure Hong Kong Airlines’ financial future, which remains under significant financial stress," a statement by Zhong said.
Zhong, who owns a 27% stake, declared himself de facto chairman after an extraordinary general meeting of shareholders a week ago, claiming he had taken control.
That led to the warring parties making unsubstantiated claims of financial mismanagement and even theft of documents, leading to a security presence at the airline’s headquarters.
The airline remains in financial peril and is in danger of losing its air operator’s license.
