Hong Kong protestors clash with police for a second night
Police and protesters in Hong Kong have clashed for a second night as a group of demonstrators tried to re-occupy a main road near government buildings, which had been cleared by security forces on Wednesday.
Police used pepper spray to try and clear the area a second time and arrested two of the protestors who are calling for free elections in Hong Kong in 2017.
Some of the protestors said they had returned to the site following the release of news footage which showed police had beaten a social worker and member of the opposition Civic Party during Wednesday’s scuffles.
Police are investigating the incident, which has sparked public outrage and the US has called for a ‘swift, transparent, and complete investigation’.
In a separate development, the BBC’s English-language news website has been blocked in mainland China, said the broadcasting organisation.
It said it was unclear whether the blackout was connected with the Hong Kong situation but the BBC said it appeared to be deliberate censorship.
