Honolulu to get multimillion dollar airport upgrade
Honolulu International Airport has been granted $16.5 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation for essential infrastructure upgrades.
The bulk of the money will be spent on widening a runway at the airport by 50 feet to meet design standards along with $500,000 to replace the lighting system which will allow flight operations to continue during low visibility.
"Hawaii residents, visitors, and businesses depend on reliable air travel. As an island state, there is no real alternative to meet our everyday transportation needs," said Sen. Mazie Hirono.
"The quality of our airports is critical to the success of our visitor industry and economy. These federal resources will help ensure safety and efficiency for passengers and workers by modernizing our airport infrastructure."
Airlift to Hawaii is expected to grow this summer by more than 7%, the Hawaii Tourism Authority predicted.
Added seat capacity will see 3.19 million seats on the market for flights between June through August, HTA says.
Domestic capacity is also rising by 8%, it said.
Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Hawaiian Airlines and United Airlines have all increased capacity or added new routes to Hawaii, especially from West Coast focus cities.
Later in the year Virgin America will add more options for Hawaii travel when it begins flights to Maui and Honolulu from San Francisco from November.
HTA also said international carriers including Air Canada Rouge, All Nippon Airways, Philippine Airlines and Qantas have added frequencies or new flights for the summer.
