Hotel grows living roof
Jurys gets even greener
The new Jurys Inn NewcastleGateshead Quays is now home to the first green roof of its size in Newcastle Gateshead.
The 203-bedroom, four storey hotel situated on Gateshead Quays is set to open later this Summer leading the way for future properties to positively contribute to environmental issues in the local area.
The ecologically responsible living sedum roof is formed of living plants which improves the thermal insulation of the building, helps support the local ecology and aids biodiversity by providing a healthy habitat for indigenous flora and fauna.
Using plant life instead of slate or other traditional roofing materials, the roof will not only look attractive, it will also reduce the risk of flood by retaining a proportion of the annual rainfall and reducing rainwater run-off.
Jurys Inn has 31 hotels across the UK and Ireland and is still the only hotel group to hold 29 Gold Awards and a Silver Award from the Green Tourism Business Scheme (GTBS). The only certification scheme validated by Visit Britain, the GTBS is the national sustainable tourism certification scheme for the UK.
Across all its hotels Jurys Inn has implemented a range of green programmes, from installing energy efficient light bulbs to monitoring each hotel’s energy consumption using an external assessor. The group has also taken simple steps which have had a big effect – reducing the number of toilet flushes when cleaning bedrooms for instance – these have helped make annual savings of 79 million litres of water. Jurys Inn employees have been key to the success of the green programme contributing ideas and suggestions, with each hotel having a ‘green champion’ to help drive new local initiatives.
David Malanaphy, General Manager of Jurys Inn Newcastle Gateshead Quays said: “We are on track to open our exciting new hotel in the heart of Gateshead later this Summer. The green roof will help us to become even more energy and waste efficient, ultimately benefiting our local community. We're keen to make green changes where we can in line with the hotel group's commitment to the environment and reinforce the work we already do which has made us environmental leaders within the hotel industry.”
